GenEq's statement released on 6/24/22 as a response to the Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:
In light of today’s Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Gender Equity Resource Center (GenEq) acknowledges the strong emotions associated with this decision, as well as the historically under-supported healthcare access for marginalized, disabled, low-income and rural communities all over the United States. With Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey overturned, access to reproductive healthcare will now vary by state (tinyurl.com/mapbystate). As part of this ruling, we are alarmed that there are those in the Supreme Court who wish to reconsider landmark civil rights decisions on Griswold v. Connecticut (contraception), Lawrence v. Texas (sodomy) and Obergefell v. Hodges (same-sex marriage).
GenEq reaffirms its commitment to reproductive justice that is focused on expansive, intersectional, and holistic approaches to looking at personal body autonomy, including decisions whether or not to have children, and the ability to parent children in safe, healthy, and sustainable environments.
GenEq is aligned with movements that uplift the needs of marginalized genders, families, and communities by ensuring access to contraception, comprehensive sex education, STI prevention and care, alternative birth options, adequate prenatal and pregnancy care, intimate partner and domestic violence assistance, adequate wages to support families, safe homes, and so much more (adapted from SisterSong, 2022).
GenEq empowers by offering tools to help campus community members examine systems of power so they can advocate for changes that support inclusive and equitable access to information, resources, and services.
