LGBTQ+ Healthcare at The Tang Center 

University Health Services (UHS) at the Tang Center provides comprehensive medical care, counseling, health promotion, and public health services to Berkeley students, and several other local institutions. UHS also provides occupational health services to faculty and staff. The Tang Center provides many resources and links to information about services both on and off campus. Counselors with an LGBTQ Focus

On the Social Services website and the Counseling and Psychological Services websites, you can find a list of counselors and their areas of interest.  Take a look at the list to see who lists LGBTQ/sexual orientation/gender identity topics, and any other areas that are important to you!

LGBTQ Indentified Counselors

While all UHS counselors have training and experience working with LGBTQ+ students, sometimes it’s important to know your counselor is queer-identified.  

The Tang Center Trans Healthcare Team 

Services and healthcare providers that are dedicated to providing support to Transgender students through University Health Services (UHS) at the Tang Center and virtually. Their goal is to ensure trans and gender non-conforming students receive the highest quality care in a supportive, respectful space. 

UC Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan

UC Berkeley's Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) covers transgender-specific medical care. Check out this page for more information about the services SHIP covers. 

Queer + Allied Pre-Med/ Pre-Health Association (QAPPA) 

QAPPA is an organization dedicated to fighting sexual and gender minority health disparities through undergraduate education and outreach, as well as the social, academic, and professional growth of queer and allied students pursuing a future in healthcare and medicine.

Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP)  

 SHEP is a group of trained student peer educators who promote sexual health at Cal by providing accurate, nonjudgmental information. Their mission is to empower students to feel comfortable with their bodies and make informed decisions about their sexuality, including whether or not to be sexually active. Services provided are inclusive of all races/ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and levels of sexual knowledge and experience.

QT Recovery Group 

A peer support group for Queer and Trans undergraduate and graduate students in/seeking recovery, practicing harm reduction, struggling with substance use or anything in between. Potential topics include moderating use, responding to triggers, exploring alternate coping strategies, identity and substance use, navigating relationships and more. All are welcome.

Every Thursday from 5-6pm on Zoom, starting on August 3rd. Please register using the form tinyurl.com/qtgroup.

POZ Health, Life, and HIV 

This site provides helpful information and resources regarding the HIV virus. On their site you can find:

  • The first steps to take if you’ve just tested HIV positive. What to do if you’re worried about getting HIV.
  • News and opinion about HIV politics, health care and more.
  • Every copy of their magazine since it first launched in 1994.
  • All about HIV treatment.
  • Community connections for chatting, dating and finding services.
  • Safer sex for people with HIV.
  • Person-to-person support.

Berkeley Free Clinic Peer Counseling  

The Berkeley Free Clinic provides free, confidential peer counseling for individuals 18 years of age and over.

Services are provided by volunteers trained in active listening. They give clients the space to explore whatever it is they would like to talk about. They meet you where you’re at—no judgment, no advice, just a compassionate space for processing and gaining perspective. During COVID-19, we’re offering peer counseling by phone.

Fireweed Collective 

Fireweed Collective offers mental health education and mutual aid through a Healing Justice lens. They help support the emotional wellness of all people, and center the needs of those most marginalized by our society. Their work seeks to disrupt the harm of systems of abuse and oppression, often reproduced by the mental health system. 

Blind LGBT Pride International 

Their mission is to promote the awareness, inclusion, and well-being of blind and vision impaired  LGBT people through education, advocacy, and peer-support. They are still the only official affiliate of any blindness consumer organization focused on the intersection of visual impairment and sexual orientation. Through email lists, virtual townhall conversations and an annual gathering at the American Council of the Blind convention, they reach out and support each other. 

The Pacific Center 

Founded in 1973, Pacific Center for Human Growth is the oldest LGBTQIA+ center in the Bay Area, the third oldest in the nation, and operates the only sliding scale mental health clinic for LGBTQIA+ and QTBIPOC people and their families in Alameda County.

Undocumented Student Program

For undocumented students. UC Berkeley’s Undocumented Student Program (USP) — a component of the Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence — provides guidance and support to undocumented undergraduates at Cal. USP practices a holistic, multicultural and solution-focused approach that delivers individualized service for each student. The mental health support, academic counseling, legal support, financial aid resources and extensive campus referral network provided by USP helps students develop the unique gifts and talents they each bring to the university, while empowering a sense of belonging. The program’s mission is to support the advancement of undocumented students within higher education and promote pathways for engaged scholarship.
