The Wilde (Johnson-Rivera) House

Initially named for the Irish writer and social critic persecuted for his queer offenses in the Victorian age, Oscar Wilde, the house has colloquially taken on the name Johnson-Rivera House. This is a nod to the leaders of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, trans women of color whose defiant efforts helped ignite queer liberation movements across the United States.

Founded in 1999 and located in the middle of UC Berkeley’s lively and hilly frat row, Johnson-Rivera was America’s first queer-themed co-op housing opportunity for students, and as such it continually strives to be an increasingly inclusive and accommodating space for queer students of all backgrounds and identities.

UNITY House Program

UNITY's House Program is located in Unit 3 on the first floor of Spens-Black, one of the five residential buildings in the complex, with it's Resource Center conveniently located in the Unit 3 Central Building. Located one block from campus, the complex has a dining hall and “Bear Market” at it’s center, as well as a recreation lounge for each Residence Hall. Each room has extra long twin beds, closets, desks, and campus free-wifi. The floor has double and triple rooms available, with an all gender inclusive floor bathroom. Most rooms in UNITY accommodate three first-year students and one of the special features of this program is the gender inclusive roommate option. Additional features of the living space are live-in resource professionals, a Unit-wide laundry room, vending machines, study spaces, the security monitor program, and the Academic Learning center which offers tutoring, peer advising, copy and fax services, and computers and printers.

Gender Justice Leadership Programs

The Gender Justice Leadership Programs (GJLP) are youth-led programs for trans and gender nonconforming young people to build public understanding, empathy, and a movement for liberation through storytelling and media organizing.

Basic Needs Center

The Basic Needs Center acts as a virtual and physical hub to support students in their journey to access essential services that impact health, belonging, and overall well-being. The Basic Needs Center team is committed to fostering belonging and justice on the UC Berkeley campus through a robust model of prevention, intervention and emergency relief efforts addressing holistic needs. We define basic needs as an ecosystem that includes: financial stability; nutritious and sufficient food; safe, secure and adequate housing; accessible and equitable health/medical care, technology and transportation.
